Call For Papers
The International Conference on
“Culture, Cognition and Governance”
The International Conference on “Culture, Cognition and Governance” will be held on June 15th - 16th, 2019. It is jointly organized by the School of Sociology and Anthropology and the Center for Culture and Cognition Studies at Sun Yat-sen University, and by the Committee on Cultural Psychology of the Chinese Psychological Society. Scholars from China, Europe, North America and beyond working on both experimental, ethnographic, linguisitc and historical studies of culture and cognition will be invited to submit their papers on the topic of “Culture, Cognition and Governance”.
The studies of culture and cognition, unlike most other fields in the cognitive sciences that study cognition in the restricted experimental contexts, explore the complex interactions among culture and mind in daily life situations. Scholars scrutinize various instances of these complex interactions and elaborations, such as cognitive dynamics and subject agency, personal experience and cultural knowledge, emotion and motivation, body and consciousness, embodied self, the individual in the collective and the collective as a thinking entity. In particular, in the contemporary world where modern science, physics and the neuro-sciences for example, has displayed striking similarities, and interacts, with centuries-long religions in both Western and non-Western societies (such as Buddhism), scholars specializing in culture and cognition studies also aim to understand two fundamental issues: 1) the complicated implications of science and technology to human cognition in this global era; 2) how human cognition expands its domain and dynamics when science interacts with non-science. Through these explorations, scholars situate human cognition into a network of relations with diverse fields in the cognitive sciences that include philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, psychology, artificial intelligence and neuroscience.
During the last decade, scholars at Sun Yat-sen University (China) have endeavored to the studies of culture, cognition and governance, and the Center for Culture and Cognition Studies has been established in 2016 aiming to integrate diverse perspectives from anthropology, philosophy, psychology and other disciplines for understanding human cognition in socially situated contexts and, in particular, in great social transformations of contemporary China.
Attending to the current development of culture and cognition studies, the International Conference on “Culture, Cognition and Governance” will invite schoalrs to address the following topics:
1) human cognitive schemes as elaborated in diverse cultural contexts;
2) modern governance and informational and biological technologies;
3) other relevant topics.
